Another common Gestalt technique is the topdog/underdog. During the topdog/underdog a client would be asked to consider two parts of their personality. This could be two parts which are in conflict with one another. The client would be encouraged to imagine a dialogue taking part between those two parts.

The top dog is the part of a person that requires that person adheres to societies standards, similarly to introjects this required adherence is often distinguished by “shoulds”, “oughts”, “musts” etc. The underdog is the part of the person that makes excuses about why those requirements shouldn’t be met. These excuses are self-sabotaging and often ensure that the societal requirements are never met. Topdog – Underdog: A commonly utilised Gestalt technique is that of the topdog-underdog dialogue.
